IP Ratings are used to classify the effectiveness of electrical enclosures in protecting the contained equipment from exposure to liquids and solids, including dirt, oil and water. IP stands for “Ingress Protection”, while the subsequent two digits are ranked based on the product’s ability to protect against solids (0 - 6) and liquids (0 - 9K). If either digit is 0, then it means that it has No Protection, while higher numbers symbolise an increased degree of protection.
An IP65 Rating means the product has the highest level of dust protection, and is able to withstand low-pressure water jets from all directions.
IP65 rated lighting has a wide array of uses in both domestic and commercial settings. Due to its longevity and durability in adverse weather conditions, it is ideal for use all over your property, from indoors to outdoors. Most commonly, outdoor lights such as IP65 Wall Lights and LED Flood Lights are installed for their extended lifespan and high-quality lighting that performs all year round, regardless of the conditions outside.
For indoor use, you may consider installing IP65 Downlights which are ideal for kitchens and areas where your light fixtures may be exposed to jets of water, especially if you have a rinse hose attachment fitted to your sink.
If you are installing IP65 lights for your bathroom, it is worth remembering that bathrooms are split into 4 zones, which are pre-determined based on the location of the fixture in relation to your water sources. It is recommended that IP65 rated lights should be installed in Zone 1, the area immediately above the shower tray or bath which has more exposure to water spray.
IP Ratings may seem like a trivial factor when purchasing your lighting , but if you install the wrong product, you become at risk of injuring yourself and damaging your property. IP Rated products are carefully tested and categorised based on their ability to protect their electrical components, so if they become compromised, you may have to spend huge sums of money on repairs.
Additionally, while IP65 provides high level dust and water protection, you may be better off using an IP44 product if you only require simple splash protection. This in turn could save you money; so it’s always best to refer to the IP rating most suitable for your application.
